Importance of Shawn Marion for Jermaine O’Neal deal to the Utah Jazz

Filed under: Carlos Boozer — Jazz Fan @ 8:08 pm

All-Star Weekend saw one major trade go down. Oft-injured Jermaine O’Neal was traded to the Miami Heat along with Jamario Moon for Shawn Marion’s expiring contract.

While none of the parties are the Jazz, this certainly helps the Jazz’s cause for retaining their big man.

Carlos Boozer, because he owns a house in Miami, was often mentioned as a possible pick-up for the Miami Heat in the off-season. With Shawn Marion’s contract expiring at the end of the year, the Heat would certainly have the money to make a run at him.

Instead, they trade for Jermaine O’Neal locking up the majority of their salary until 2010, when a majority of other teams are also hoping to rid salary in order to make a run at such free agents as Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

Apparently, the Miami Heat wasn’t as much of a suitor as Jazz fans feared.

And freeing up cap-space in Toronto isn’t likely to lure Boozer there, even though they should have enough to pay Boozer what he wants.

Boozer likes to win, and there is much more of a chance of Boozer taking home a championship in Utah than by playing for the Raptors.
